Quito 18.jpg

The bell tower of Iglesia La Merced stands above Calle Garcia Moreno and is an example of Moorish design but is also considered one of the last churches built in the colonial period. The tower is the highest church tower in the Old Town or Centro Historico which was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1978 because it is one of the largest, least-altered and best preserved historic centers in the Americas.
