Quito 37a.jpg

Glazed green and gold ceramic tiles decorate a dome on the roof of la Compania, formally known as La Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus (The Church of the Society of Jesus). The 17th century church is one of the best known churches in Quito and has been catalogued by UNESCO among the hundred most important World Heritage Site Monuments in the world. The San Francisco Church and Monastery can be seen in the background. The Old Town of Quito was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1978 because it is one of the largest, least-altered and best preserved historic centers in the Americas.
